Think Music Theory Is Too Hard? Here’s Why

In my opinion (as a 35+ year music professional), music theory is taught in the most confusing and painful way imaginable. One example of this, students are often confronted with multiple sets of systems to described the same thing in different classes.

For example, Scale Degrees are referenced using numbers (0-9) in private lessons, roman numerals (both upper and lower case) in analysis, terms like Tonic, Submediant, Dominant, etc. when you get to theory class, and something called “Solfege” (Do-Re-Mi) in ear training. Too often the student has no idea all these systems are referring to the same basic thing, scale degrees. And this is just one example!

Scale Degree Naming Schemes…

  • Numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
  • Names: Tonic, Supertonic, Mediant, Subdominant, Dominant, Submediant, Leading Tone
  • Roman: I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII
  • Solfege: Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti

Can Music Theory be made easier to understand?

Yes it can. All it really takes is boiling theory down to its simplest form. Then, present it in a uniform way, much easier to understand. For example. Let’s take a better approach to Scale Degree presentation mentioned above.

Instead of using different systems for private lessons, analysis, music theory class, and ear training, we could use standard numbers (0-9) for all of them. We’ve removed the obstacles of having to learn solfege (including all the solfege names for notes not in the scale), english names for each scale degree, proper use of upper and lower case roman numerals, etc., BEFORE any functionality of music can be learned. We get right down to business using a system every student is already familiar with, the numbers 0-9. Again, this is just one example.

With consistency across the board, all of this can be learned and retained easily. If planning on attending college where all these terms will be needed, you can always learn these terms and systems AFTER you understand how music works. Believe me, it is MUCH EASIER that way!

As indicated before, this is only one example how something that can be explained so simply has become unnecessarily complex.

So, the solution is to make music theory simpler, not the current trend of making it harder. I believe the study of how music works can be reduced to these two basic concepts… First, learn the major scale. Then, use the major scale to learn everything else. Sounds pretty simple to me!

Corrupted Ose.exe File

Error 193 0xc1 may appear if the file 'ose.exe' is not present in the installation directory or it has become corrupt. Replacing this file may solve the problem.

1. Insert Microsoft Office installation disc.
2. Open My Computer, open CD / DVD Drive location.
3. Double click to open the following directory:
Files Setup
4. Select the file Ose.exe and click Edit | Copy.
5. Click Back and open the following directory:
C: Program Files Common Files Microsoft Shared Source Engine
6. Click Edit | Paste.

Wrong Settings of Registry

Microsoft Office stores installation related configurations in your system's registry. If some of these registry settings are corrupted, it may result in error 193 0xc1 in Windows 7, Vista and XP.

1. Download a Registry Cleaner software.
2. Install and run the downloaded program on your computer.

Corruption in Program Files

For running the instances of Microsoft Office suite, the installation files must be unmodified. Corrupted installation files often lead to Windows error 193 0xc1.

1. Click Start | Control Panel.
2. Click Programs | Uninstall a Program.
3. Select Microsoft Office from the list of installed programs and click Uninstall button.
4. Select Repair the installation, click Next button.
5. Follow the on screen instructions.

Lack of Free Disk Space

Lack of free disk space for performing Microsoft Office setup operations can result in error 193 0xc1. Using System Cleaner application, clean the disk space to solve your problem. Otherwise use the Disk CleanUp tool by doing the steps provided below:

1. Click Start | All Programs | Accessories System Tools | Disk CleanUp.
2. Select the system drive and press OK.
3. Follow the instructions on your screen.

Problems with Services

You also need to fix computer services to get rid of the error in question. The steps required are as under:

1. Click Start, type Services.msc and press ENTER.
2. Right click and select Properties for the following two services:
AudioEndpointBuilder, Multimedia Class Scheduler
3. Under General tab, note down the Path to Executable.
4. Click OK when done.
5. Now, click Start, type RegEdit and press ENTER.
6. Locate the following registry location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services
7. First, click MMCSS key and double click the ImagePath string. Replace the value with the Path to Executable that you just noted down in the Step 3.
8. Do the same for AudioEndPointBuilder. Click it, double click the ImagePath string and replace the value with the Path to Executable you have noted down.
9. Close Registry Editor.

The Mediterranean Diet

With the plethora of diets so acutely focused on carbohydrates intake, you may be wondering why the Mediterranean diet beat out a low-carbohydrate approach. After all, LC diets not only work for some people, studies also show that low- and very low-carbohydrate diets have helped obese individuals decrease insulin resistance, lower triglycerides, favorably change blood cholesterol levels and lose weight. Yet they are not for everyone.

First, LC diets may be tough to stick with over the long term. And, one solution to that issue may involve transition from low carbohydrate to "controlled" carbohydrate, eating a specific amount of carbohydrates per sitting and making healthy carbohydrate per sitting and making healthy carbohydrate choices (fiber rich whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables) .

Secondly, recent research out of the University of Alabama Birmingham found that high-fat; Low-carbohydrate diets may be detrimental to those with ischemic cardiovascular disease or a predisposition to heart attacks. In their study, obese and normal weight rats fed a high-fat, LC diet had larger, more damaging heart attacks compared to rats on a low-fat control diet.

In addition, the rats on the high-fat, LC diet had greater risk of death from pump failures and arrhythmias. Altering dietary macronutrient composition looks to affect the type of fuel the heart uses to function, when in fact carbohydrates is the most efficient source of fuel for our bodies when recovering from a heart attack. Although these results do not suggest that high-fat, low-carbohydrate diets cause heart attacks or that they are harmful, it does raise some red flags that should be taken into consideration prior to going on a similar diet.

Take a close look at your lifestyle and choose the plan that will best meet your needs. And, why go on a low-carbohydrate diet, or at least why stay on one if a Mediterranean diet may be just as effective?

THE BOTTOM LINE: If you talk to your co-workers, neighbors and friends, you'll probably meet at least one person who has been successful on just about every popular diet out there. And according to the POUNDS LOST trial, the actual parameters of the diet (carbohydrate, fat and protein content) may matter less than your ability to stick with it.

After all, if you can not follow a diet plan, you will not lose weight. So, take a close, realistic look at your lifestyle and choose the plan that will best meet your needs. And remember, though diets work in the short term, the best way to keep weight off forever is by making healthy foods a permanent part of your diet and incorporating lifestyle changes you can live with.

Getting a video is a great idea because then all of your friends and family can see the baby in action too! Sometimes you will be able to see the baby flipping, sucking on its thumb, and doing all sorts of cute things.

You are only pregnant once and your baby is only that tiny once. Kids grow up so fast! You don’t want to forget what your baby looked like when it was that small. Your pregnancy ultrasound picture will be something that you will cherish for the rest of your life. If you are pregnant you should definitely get a sonogram that will capture your little one. Toast with avocado and an egg. This breakfast tastes great and can be made within a couple of minutes. The avocado is full of healthy fats, and the egg provides you with some protein you need to fuel your body well for the day.

Fruit, nut and yogurt parfait. There are delicious plant-based yogurts out there that you must try if you haven’t yet – search for local brands in your area. You simply layer up some yogurt, nuts, fruit, nut butter and honey to create a delicious breakfast full of healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals.

Make-ahead breakfast mini-muffins. When you have absolutely no time in the morning, prepare these ahead of time and even take them with you. Simply whisk some egg, spinach, other vegetables you desire into muffin tins, bake these at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes, and they are ready to go.

Overnight chia. Mix in oats, chia seeds, honey and some nut-milk into a jar and then leave it overnight in the fridge. You can add other ingredients you may desire to make this to your taste, like cacao powder, blueberries or peanut butter.

Don’t over-complicate it – that’s exactly what causes the feeling of overwhelm that holds you back from eating breakfast daily. Get your healthy nutrition into you so you feel great all day.

Discipline is a huge part of every dancer’s success. One dictionary definition states that discipline is orderly, prescribed conduct, or an orderly pattern of behavior. It’s what’s known as self-control. Most things we do demand that we utilize self-control in our active, diligent participation. Work, school, even recreational pursuits move ahead when discipline comes into play. Every professional dancer in the world has adopted this tool.

Definitions are all very well and good, but what does it mean to be disciplined? It means showing up regularly. We’ve all heard the old adage that practice makes perfect. It wouldn’t be an old adage unless there was some truth to it. Consistently working at a thing means improvement and growth will occur. Your dancing will improve if you approach it in a disciplined way. Discipline is what drives us to stay consistent.

Discipline requires developing an unwavering level of dedication. It doesn’t allow for excuses (aside from obvious things like vomit or fire), or wimping out. In a way, discipline is the opposite of insanity: by doing the same things over and over, you CAN expect different results.

Discipline is closely linked to intent. Intention lays the roadmap; discipline is what drives the bus. Setting intentions creates a concrete plan of action. Discipline drives us to stick with the original intention and succeed. 

Discipline is power. Dance and discipline go hand in hand; it is one of the primary differences between success and failure. Make it yours, and you will get wherever you wish to go.
